Ideas -> Suspend or Hibernate Idle machines -> Steps
On most distributions when we login into Gnome desktop we can use menu option "System -> Preferences -> Power management" or "System -> Preferences -> More preferences -> Power management" option to launch GUI tool which helps in configuring power options.
The default settings in this tool in fedora look like:

We modify the settings so that monitor switches of automatically after
five minutes and machine suspends after ten minutes. The changed
settings looks like:

After this we also apply settings to make them system wide, which
requires root password. We get prompt like this

when we try to apply setting system wide. Once we enter correct
root password system gets configured properly.
